Inspired by real events and spanning three eras of German history, NEVER LOOK AWAY tells the story of a young art student, Kurt (Tom Schilling), who falls in love with fellow student Ellie (Paula Beer). Ellie's father and famous doctor, Professor Seeband (Sebastian Koch), is dismayed at his daughter's choice of boyfriend and vows to destroy the relationship. What neither Kurt nor Ellie knows is that their lives are already connected through a terrible crime Seeband committed decades ago.

Critic Reviews:

  • " This is a film that throws a frame around history, and makes it as intimate and tender as a portrait. " – Robbie Collin (Daily Telegraph – UK)
  • " If Never Look Away gives us a plot of blithe, even sudsy-at-times compellingness, with pulsing subplots and plural characters, isn't that better than a worthy bore? " – Nigel Andrews (Financial Times)
  • " Most biopics never crack an artist's process, if they even try, but this one goes in hard, in a courageous way. That's part of von Donnersmarck's purpose – to chart the artist's growth and self-realization. " – Paul Byrnes (
