"What a life!"

I was lucky to see this at the 2021 NZ International Film Festival, and can't recommend it enough. It's a terrific survey of Gulpilil's career (which is immense!), but he's such a lovely and honest person, so the documentary is fascinating anyway. Best of all was his indigenous perspective on the concept of film-making, acting, and stories: he was very eloquent on this, to the point of very thoughtful philosophy. Teamed up with the astoundingly brilliant documentary about Bangarra, the Australian indigenous dance company, and 2021 was an incredible year for Aussie documentaries.

Description

My Name Is Gulpilil

“I'm an actor, I'm a dancer, I'm a singer and also, a painter. This film is about me. This is my story of my story.” David Gulpilil is an iconic figure of Australian cinema and has been for fifty years. His mesmerising, electrifying presence has leapt off the big screen and changed Australian screen representation forever.

Critic Reviews:

  • " A documentary with a difference – no, make that several differences – lyrically captures the rare creative essence of its subject, the incomparable Australian actor, dancer and dreamer, David Gulpilil. " – Leigh Paatsch (Herald Sun, Australia)
  • " The effect is unbearably moving and utterly engaging. There is no film quite like this in our cinema, just as there is no one quite like the man. " – Paul Byrnes (The Age (Australia))
  • " This is not a conventional documentary so much as a very personal celebration of this man's brilliant career and multiple talents. " – Lynden Barber (Limelight)
