"Good viewing"
4 stars"

Good casual viewing and well produced as usual by the BBC.

"1970's version of "sherlock" - a great watch!" Purchased on Mighty Ape

A nice easy watch dvd – worth adding to a collection if you are a follower of the genre. I found the plots – twisty and suspenseful, but not too heavy. The main actors were believable and the era of policing was well portrayed. I especially liked the “tweed jacket and pipe!” How very English.

If you enjoy a trip down memory lane, but want it to be thrilling and entertaining … Then Murder Most English. The Flaxborough Cronicles is a worthwhile addition to any collection.

"British detective stories at their best"
5 stars"
Purchased on Mighty Ape

If you like detective stories with a bit of a twist and a descent plot you're sure to like Murder Most English. Don't be put off by the slower pace and the fact these were produced in the 70's. The detectives get their man but all it not as simple as it appears at first.

Description

Murder Most English contains four terrific tales of detective sleuthing based on the Flaxborough novels of Colin Watson. Starring Anton Rodgers as Detective Inspector Purbright and Christopher Timothy as Detective Sergeant Love, the series was filmed in 1977 and is a glowing tribute to an England long-gone of heavy tweed jackets, dial telephones, typewriter ribbons and old-fashioned investigation
and deduction. Told over seven episodes: Hopjoy Was Here, Lonelyheart 4122, The Flaxborough Crab and Coffin Scarcely Used tell tales of mysterious murders, dire disappearances and conniving conspiracies that are designed to keep the local
investigators at bay, but their layers of intrigue simply draw the detectives in deeper. One surprising and prescient tale considers the effects of an early variation on Viagra that sets the small town astir in most unexpected ways. But whatever the crime and whoever the culprit, one thing you can be sure of is a case or two of Murder Most English.
