Louis de Camors is a man accustomed to wealth. He spends his day in leisure, idling the days away in nothing more than spending time with glamorous people and partying the evening away. Then his father commits suicide, revealing in a letter that the family's state of affairs is in ruins. His father had taken out too many loans for Louis to attain any loans for himself. His college friend, Lescande, has offered Louis a loan, but since he is too proud to accept and the fact that he had once had an affair with Lescande's wife, he tells Lescande that he has no need for money, that he has plenty to live upon. But will his lie spiral into more lies? Or will he confess to Lescande and request his assistance in returning his life to its previous grandeur?
Author Biography
Octave Feuillet (1821 - 1890) was a French novelist and dramatist. He was elected to the Academie francaise in 1862 and in 1868 he was made librarian of Fontainebleau palace, where he had to reside for a month or two in each year. In 1867 he produced his masterpiece Monsieur de Camors and in 1872 he wrote Julia de Trecoeur. He spent his last years, after the sale of Les Paillers, in ceaseless wandering, due to his depression and ill health. He died in Paris on 29 December 1890. His last book was Honneur d'artiste (1890). Maxime Du Camp (1822 - 1894) was a French writer and photographer. Du Camp traveled in Europe and the East between 1844 and 1845, and again between 1849 and 1851 in company with Gustave Flaubert. After his return, Du Camp wrote about his traveling experiences. Flaubert also wrote about his experiences with Maxime. In 1851, Du Camp became a founder of the Revue de Paris (suppressed in 1858) and a frequent contributor to the Revue des deux mondes. In 1853, he became an officer of the Legion of Honour. Serving as a volunteer with Garibaldi in his 1860 conquest of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Du Camp recounted his experiences in Expedition des deux Siciles (1861). In 1870 he was nominated for the senate, but his election was frustrated by the downfall of the Empire. He was elected a member of the Academie francaise in 1880, mainly, it is said, on account of his history of the Commune, published under the title of Les Convulsions de Paris (1878-1880).
