Description

Some Physiological Descriptions of Minute Bodies made by Magnifying Glasses with Observations and Inquiries Thereupon. Published in 1665, the first major publication of the Royal Society, this work became the first scientific bestseller inspiring a wide public interest in the new science of microscopy, and is particularly notable for being the first book to illustrate insects, plants, etc., as seen through microscopes. It is also notable for coining the biological term "cell". Hooke (1635-1703) was an English natural philosopher, architect and polymath who at one time was simultaneoulsy the curator of experiments of the Royal Society, a member of its council, Gresham Professor of Geometry, and Surveyor of the City of London after the Great Fire.
