Since few years metal matrix composites (MMCs) with light metal matrix are successfully applied in the automotive industry, e.g. in fiber-reinforced pistons or hybrids for crank cases. A further important field of indsutrial applications of these high-tech materials is the aerospace industry. The properties of MMCs can be directly designed "into" the material. With such a potential MMCs can fulfill all the wishes of design engineers, since they are true custom-made materials. This book now conveys the state-of-the-art and the possibilities of the development of MMCs as engineering and functional materials. It is thus of utmost value to all materials scientists and engineers that want to get an in-depth background of the potentials these materials can offer in research, development and design engineering.
