Attached to the cause of King Joseph, he was conspicuous during the murderous struggle in Spain and was several times wounded. In 1814, he had risen to become colonel of artillery and was stationed by the Emperor at the fortifications of Paris then threatened by the Allies, where he was at the head of the students of the Polytechnic School defending the Buttes Chaumont. In fact, owing to the part he played in the wars of the Empire, he was prosecuted and imprisoned by order of Ferdinand VII, after the fall of Napoleon. Later, he was one of the first grandees of Spain called to the Senate. In a word, the Empress' father was a man of liberal views, energy and cultured tastes, who was ever ready to render service to others.
