Barnehurst had, like much of that part of London, suffered at the hands of the Luftwaffe in the second world war. Vast areas were laid flat as planes targeted the nearby East End of London. The resulting 1950s housing was put up quickly, and with little regard to the older properties that still remained. Architecture there is, at best, a mis-matched mix. The borough today is a series of straight streets, with mostly terraced and semi-detached housing. Just the occasional Crescent or Close breaks the tedium of Barnehurst's appearance.
