Excerpt from Lives of the British Admirals, Containing a New and Accurate Naval History, From the Earliest Periods, Vol. 4 of 4: With a Continuation Down to the Year 1779, Including the Naval Transactions of the Late War, and an Account of the Recent Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere When the late Mr. Robert Dodfley formed the delign of that ufefnl hook, The Preceptor, which appeared in 1748, Mr. Campbell was one of the ingenious gentlemen applied to, to aflifi in the undertaking; and the parts written by him were the introduaion to chronology, and the difcourfe on trade and commerce, both of which difp'layed an extenlive fund of know ledge upon thefe fnbjeels. In 17 50, he pnblilhed the firft fe parate edition of his Prefent State of Europe a work which had been originally begun in 1746, in the Mufenm, a very valuable periodical performance, printed for Mr. Dodfley. There is no production of our author's that hath met with a better te ception. It has gone through fix editions, and fully hath it deferred this encouragement; for it is not eafy to find a book which, in fuch a moderate compafs, contains fo much hiltorical and political information.
