John Dawson Winter III known as Johnny Winter, was an American blues guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, singer, and producer. Best known for his high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances in the late 1960s and 1970s, Winter also produced three Grammy Award-winning albums for blues singer and guitarist Muddy Waters. After his time with Waters, Winter recorded several Grammy-nominated blues albums. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 63rd in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”
*Johnny Winter was one of the leading lights of the blues-rock movement in the '60s, and he was a tireless road warrior, touring frequently and playing high-energy shows across the country until his death in 2014. But for some reason, Winter had never played Japan, a nation with plenty of enthusiastic blues fans, until April 15, 2011, when Winter and his band took the stage at the Zepp Music Hall in Tokyo. A mobile recording system was on hand to capture the historic event, and Live from Japan documents a typically fiery show from the Texas guitar slinger, showing off his powerful instrumental style as he wails through a set of blues standards. Songs include “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” “Dust My Broom,” “Blackjack,” “It's All Over Now,” “Highway 61 Revisited,” and many more. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi**
