Description

Excerpt from Life and Administration of Sir Robert Eden On May 8, 1758, he was promoted from cadet to ensign in the Coldstream Regiment of Footguards,1 and in that posi tion he embarked with the second battalion of that famous regiment in July, 1760, for active service in Germany, where the seven years' war was then raging. He was promoted to the position of Lieutenant and Captain in the Coldstream Guards on September 23, 1762, and returned with his regi ment to London at the conclusion of the war. His services had been doubtless commendable, but no especial record of them remains. The frontispiece is copied from the only known likeness of Eden, and shows him at this period of his life dressed in the uniform of the Coldstream Guards - scarlet coat, with dark blue, almost purple, facings, gold buttons and edgings, crimson sash over right shoulder, white lace tie and ruffles at the wrist, buff waistcoat and breeches, dark garters, and white long stockings or gaiters. (the original of this portrait is a small oil painting, about fourteen inches high, by an unknown artist, in the possession of Mr. Fred erick Morton Eden, of London, Who kindly had it copied for this work.)
