Description

Excerpt from Letters From Italy, Describing the Customs and Manners of That Country in the Years 1765, and 1766: To Which Is Annexed, an Admonition to Gentlemen Who Pass the Alps, in Their Tour Through Italy This f'rory I would apply to Voltaire him felf, and every Frencbman who learns Englzjb after he is twenty-five years of age. Though they may be fufiiciently infirueted to relifh the good fenfe, and, pofiibly, the wit and hu mour of our Speo'latorr in profe, the powers of Sbakefipeare in'meafure, will always remain unfelt. They may underf'tand the confiruc tion, as a fchool-boy reads Virgil, but they never will catch the fire. If Voltaire found fo, much difference betwixt the original and tranflation of the Speetatorr, I do not doubt, but with a thorough knowledge of Englijlr, he would find as much, or more, betwixt the Sbakefioeare he now reads, and the sbake/ioeare he would then feel.
