Description

Lothar Matthäus was a strong and impulsive player with physical strength, tactical versatility and talent which made him a famous champion for a long time. He was a real man of iron who went through many different seasons and who, for this reason, ended up belonging to all of them: he stayed young for a long time. He made his official debut for his country’s national team when he was 19 years old, and retired at 39. Matthäus won many prizes and awards, from the World Cup as the captain of the German team, to the Italian championship for Inter Milan. One championship does not seem much when compared to the seven championships won for Bayern, it must be noted that since then, the blue-blacks have been waiting to win another Italian championship. That victory in 1989, known as the record championship, bore the brand of that number 10 shirt who joined Inter Milan as an excellent player and left as a leader.

When Matthäus played for Inter Milan, he was seen as a hero. That was much more so in Italy than in Germany where people may have been jealous of the success he had achieved abroad. The film clips of that time, included as footage in this DVD, show the heart of a champion. His physical and technical qualities, his speed as a runner, his mastery of football, his powerful and accurate shot, his “vision” of the goal often made him score like a forward. His showpiece was a booming right after sprinting and delivering a one-two to his opponents with a devastating burst of energy.

Even if he left Inter Milan in 1992, Lothar Matthäus still feels his homeground is at San Siro Stadium, not only for the championship and the UEFA Cup he won there but also for his best game ever (Germany-Yugoslavia 4-1, 1990 World Cup) and the European Player of the Year Awards Ceremony. When he left after an injury to his knee, it seemed he had reached the end of his career. Conversely, he stayed on as a protagonist of world football as strong, stubborn and classy as ever. After retiring from playing, Matthäus began his coaching career which he continues today.
