As an aftershave, it definitely works, and it's pretty darn cheap too. The scent doesn't smell that much like Bay Rum though, if you're getting this for the scent like I was I'd consider looking elsewhere.

I already have a ‘top quality’ Bay Rum (St Johns) and it is superb. But there are times when I need ‘something’ more casual but similar scent. The Layrite No.9 fits that slot nicely. Very nice scent. Not as strong or long lasting as the St Johns, but nothing else is either. I like the lack of the ‘burn’ with the Layrite (unless I bung it on too thick). It's a very pleasurable scent. Won't last all day…maybe 4–5 hours of smelling lovely! Worth buying. I will buy again.
