The greater part of them will particularly interest the surviving associates and friends of the men who withdrew from the Republican party in 1872, and thenceforward remained outside of its fold; for they set forth with clearness and force the reasons which prompted them to this memorable revolt against organ ized intolerance and political greed, and made their re turn impossible. Although the party still lives, it has completely outlasted the causes which produced it and made it a necessity, While in the clear mirror of his tory and the light of existing facts it is now seen that the old rallying-cry of reform within the party was a false pretense and a mischievous delusion.
