Description

Sally Nowlan uses her experience as a former sheep farmer, a vet nurse, and rural journalist to engage the reader with her detailed knowledge of rural life, and sheep. The floor was moving and Jumbuck rocked on his hooves as he watched more and more sheep climbing up the ramps into this strange floating thing. Later that night, with rumbling shakes and loud thumping, it started moving. Jumbuck watched as the lights on the shore gradually faded away. He was on his way to the live export markets in the Middle East.

Author Biography:

Sally grew up on the family farm near Bimbi, a small village in South West NSW. One of five daughters, she spent her childhood out in the paddocks with her father, doing sheep work, riding her horse and generally being a tomboy. After six years of secondary boarding school in Sydney and Teachers College, she then headed off overseas on adventurous travels, which included an amazing overland trip from Cairo to Capetown. Three years later Sally returned home just before her mother's sudden and tragic death, after which she and her sister Annabel stayed to support their father and help manage the farm. They worked on and managed all aspects of the farm's Merino sheep, cattle and cropping production. As the only female farmers in the area at the time they proved to the locals that daughters were just as good as sons when it came to being successful farmers. Sally eventually followed Annabel to Sydney where they both pursued their non-rural ambitions. Sally worked in PR, before being recruited by ABC Radio as a rural journalist. She spent the next three years covering all aspects of farming life in Western Victoria. It was during this time that she discovered the animal welfare issues of live export. Sally later moved to Melbourne to work on a variety of ABC programs including the Country Hour and Bush Telegraph. During a career of around fifteen years with the ABC she had time out working as a freelance journalist and also became a qualified vet nurse. A highlight was working at the Lort Smith Animal Hospital emergency unit and dealing with the challenges of people and their pets. Sally worked with Parks Victoria for the past ten years in communications and media, promoting its protection of native places and creatures. In 2018 she launched her book 'Jumbucks Misadventure' for young readers, about a pet sheep who gets caught up in the live export trade. Now that she has 'left the office' Sally works as a freelance writer, and remains a dedicated animal lover and sheep fancier! Sally became seriously ill about a month after she launched her first book 'Jumbuck's Misadventure' and tragically, she died on July 12th 2019.
