"deliciously edible"
5 stars"

Julie&Julia is a visual banquet with gourmet production values and epicurian performances. As is the case with all great food, we eat with our eyes: exquisitely detailed costumes, settings, scripting, direction and, above all, impeccable performances. I loved every enchantingly witty moment and rate Julie&Julia among the finest films I have ever seen. Unmissable! Unmissable!

"Lived up to expectations"

This movie confirmed the talent of Meryl Streep as she played the slightly comic very determined English woman of the early 20th century. The American present day counterpart was truly believable and in all I enjoyed this movie very much

"Delightful, delectable, & delicious "

What an enjoyable experience it is to watch Meryl Streep become immersed in her passion for cooking (as Julia Child). As always, her ability to take on the persona of the person she is portraying is second to none, and this is no exception. I actually ‘saw’ Julia Child on the screen as Meryl Streep took me through her experiences as a gastronomic writer (and cook). Similarly, Amy Adams was excellent in her portrayal of the New Yorker struggling to bring meaning to her own existence (and difficult housing situation). This film made me laugh frequently with warm appreciation of the trials and tribulations faced by both women as they each went through their own (though similar) learning situations with food. Highly recommended to all audiences, but be warned, after watching this, you may decide that your usual diet is pretty boring!

"A delightful movie that will make you hungry."

This utterly delightful film features two counter-pointed stories, both based on real life. In Paris in the 1950s, Julia Child, wife of an American diplomat, looks for something to do with herself and learns to cook, French-style; in New York, in the present, Julie Powell decides to cook her way through Julia Child's iconic cookbook, and record it in a blog.

Meryl Streep is stunning as the larger than life Julia Child, creating a character that is more the way Julie imagines Julia to be than perhaps she really was. Stanley Tucci as her husband is equally superb; his Oscar nomination this year (for ‘The Lovely Bones’) was for the wrong role.

Some people have suggested that the modern story is waeker and wasn't necessary but I think they counter-balanced each other beautifully.

Amy Adams is excellent as Julie, less perky than she often is, and Chris Messina is fine as her supportive husband (though he eats like a pig).

And the food! It will make you hungry to watch this, the food is so divine. The 'Making of ' extra on the DVD tells us that all the food was cooked on set and the cast was expected to eat it!

The DVD also comes with a director's commentary, but Nora Ephron, a good director, seemed to have little to say and I gave up on it quite soon. I may try again later.

But a great movie for a night in. Just eat first.
