He has published several volumes of memoirs - all great fun, but unrevealing. This is partly what has attracted Graham Lord. Like his previous subject David Niven he feels there is much to uncover. Mortimer himself is prepared to co-operate and doesn't seem to worry about warts and all. Lord's proposal is full of good stories, and there is much, much more. The serial mileage should be as good as Niven. Lord anticipates two years if he starts now so it could go into the 2005 schedule.

Graham Lord is a biographer who has also published novels. For nearly 20 years he was the influential book columnist of the Sunday Express. He lives mainly in France.
