Description

To support athletes training at high intensities.

A specially formulated combination of nutrients and herbs designed to support the stress of athletes training at high intensities, both physically and mentally, and to assist in the recovery of symptoms of overtraining syndrome (OTS) during periods of intense exercise and physical exertion.

OTS is an imbalance between intense training and adequate recovery, a maladapted response to excessive exercise without adequate rest, and manifests itself with both physiological and psychological symptoms which negatively affect athletic performance.[1,2]

Symptoms of overtraining include: compromised performance, unexpected fatigue, disrupted sleep patterns, apathy, disturbances in mood, muscle aches and pains, poor concentration, immunosuppression (with a greater risk of infections, particularly colds and urinary tract infections), poor tissue regeneration, elevated resting heart rate and elevated cortisol.[1,2]

The most likely candidates for OTS are elite athletes, although recreational athletes can also over-train by doing too much too soon or failing to get adequate rest and nutrition.[2]

This formula helps to support healthy immune function, recovery time, physical and mental stress, energy production and healthy cortisol production.

Withania – KSM-66® extract
Withania has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine as an adaptogen to support the body in times of stress. KSM-66® is a standardised and clinically trialled extract of Withania somnifiera shown to support healthy stress response including healthy serum cortisol levels in healthy people.[3,4]

Withania processes many therapeutic activities that are of benefit in OTS.[5]

Siberian ginseng
Siberian ginseng may help to improve physical performance after periods of physical exertion/stress. In an 8-week study, Siberian ginseng supplementation was shown to enhance exercise endurance capacity, improve maximal heart rate during exhaustive exercise and alter metabolism for sparing glycogen in recreationally trained males.[6]

In another study, it was demonstrated that Siberian ginseng showed a three-fold increase in physical work capacity and reduced exhaustion which was partially attributed to the body’s improved oxygen metabolism.[7]

Astragalus
Astragalus has been traditionally used in western herbal medicine to help maintain a healthy immune system.[8]

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
CoQ10 is an essential component of the mitochondria of cells where it is involved in generating ATP, the energy currency of the body. It acts as a free radical scavenger and a potent antioxidant.

Vitamin C
Regular consumption of vitamin C has a beneficial effect on reducing respiratory symptoms in people under heavy physical stress and reduces the risk of developing the common cold in people exposed to short periods of extreme physical stress.[9,10]

In a study where competitive runners where supplemented with 600mg of vitamin C daily, they experienced significantly less colds post-race and a shorter duration than the group who were not taking anything.[10]

Other studies also support the use of vitamin C in the prevention of frequent respiratory infections in subjects doing heavy exercise.[9]

Vitamin C provides antioxidant protection by regenerating other antioxidants within the body such as glutathione, tocopherol and flavonoids.

Zinc
During periods of intense exercise the zinc levels in the body can decline. Studies show zinc is involved in a healthy immune response.[11]
