Description

Excerpt from Irrfahrten The exercises accompanying this book embody the experience of the editor, who has found in her own work that only by close study and imitation of German models can a pupil be taught to write the language easily and idiomatically. These twelve exercises, which may be divided into twenty-four, are suited to those who have already mastered the simple forms of the language and the elementary rules of syntax. Though the sentences seem long and difficult, they may easily be written by any one who is familiar with the declensions and conin gations and the rules of arrangement, and who will study carefully the model text; and they will be found much more interesting and stimulating than the disconnected phrases generally used at this stage of study. Such exer cises are supplied for French by Grandgent's excellent Materials for French Composition, but have not hitherto been obtainable for German. A similar set, though of a more elementary nature, will soon be issued to accompany Whitney's Introductory German Reader.
