Wheatley founded the Index Society and printed his well-known paper entitled What is an Index? But the interest aroused in the subject was not maintained. During the following twenty years little was published in text-book form beyond a few guides to the Civil Service Examinations in precis writing and indexing. Since 1900 some meritorious treatises have appeared, but these are not readily obtainable on the London book-market. Hence many students will be grateful to the publishers of the present work for this addition to the literature of a somewhat obscure and neglected subject.
