When Juan's best friend Jamie has a violent fight with his father, he decides to leave town quickly. Juan steals his mother's car and they go on the road to Mexico with Jamie's sister Amber to help Jamie hide out until the situation calms down. On the way, they search for the perfect wave to surf, Juan and Amber fall for each other and the three of them find an amazing surfing island when tragedy strikes. Jamie is lost in the huge waves and Juan and Amber are forced to return without him and face the consequences of their actions.

Jack Lopez grew up in outhern California and was influenced by the burgeoning surf culture. He has an MFA degree from the University of California and is a professor of English at Cal State.
