Description

This book showcases over 100 cutting-edge research papers from the 4th International Conference on Research into Design (ICoRD’13) – the largest in India in this area – written by eminent researchers from over 20 countries, on the design process, methods and tools, for supporting global product development (GPD). The special features of the book are the variety of insights into the GPD process, and the host of methods and tools at the cutting edge of all major areas of design research for its support. The main benefit of this book for researchers in engineering design and GPD are access to the latest quality research in this area; for practitioners and educators, it is exposure to an empirically validated suite of methods and tools that can be taught and practiced.

Author Biography:

Amaresh Chakrabarti is a Professor of Engineering Design at Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He has a BE in Mechanical Engineering from University of Calcutta, India, ME in Mechanical Systems Design from Indian Institute of Science, and a PhD in Engineering Design from University of Cambridge, UK. After PhD, Professor Chakrabarti led for ten years the Design Synthesis team at the EPSRC Centre for Excellence Engineering Design Centre at University of Cambridge, before joining Indian Institute of Science. Professor Chakrabarti worked extensively in the areas of design synthesis and creativity, eco-design and sustainability, and knowledge engineering and management, and authored/edited 9 books (5 published by Springer), over 250 peer-reviewed articles, and has 8 patents granted/pending. With Professor Lucienne Blessing, Professor Chakrabarti co-authored DRM, a design research methodology used widely around the world as a framework for carrying out engineering design research. Professor Chakrabarti is an Associate Editor of AI EDAM Journal (Cambridge University Press), Area Editor for Research in Engineering Design (Springer), Regional Editor for Journal for Remanufacturing (Springer), and Advisory Editor for eight International Journals including Journal of Engineering Design (Taylor & Francis), Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy (Springer), and International Journal of Design Creativity and Innovation (Taylor & Francis). Professor Chakrabarti is on the Advisory Board of Design Society, UK, a member of the CII National Committee on Design, India, and a member of the Jury for India Design Mark. Professor Chakrabarti founded IDeASLab - the first laboratory in India for research into design creativity, sustainability and innovation. He is Programme chair for International Conferences on Research into Design (ICoRD), 22nd CIRP Design Conference (CIRP Design 2012) and a vice-Chair for AI in Design (AID) and Design Computing and Cognition (DCC) Conferences. Professor Chakrabarti is an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers, the only peer society under the Royal Charter in the UK representing engineering design as a profession. Dr. Raghu V. Prakash is a Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India. He received his PhD in 'Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics - Notch Fatigue under Aircraft Spectrum Loading' from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, in 1993. He completed BE (Mechanical Engineering) in 1985 from Anna University, Chennai and MS (Eng) in 1989 from the IISc. He has more than 15 years of industrial, research and teaching experience. Dr. Prakash's research areas include structural integrity assessment; fatigue life prediction; fatigue under random loading; non-traditional methods of damage characterization, mechanical behavior of materials, miniature specimen testing, size-effects on material properties, environment induced fracture, high speed deformation behaviour of materials, test systems design for durability assessment and product design. He has over 20 publications in peer-reviewed national and international journals. He has also contributed chapters in many conference proceedings.
