On the 6th June 1944, 19 year old Jim Ryan, a tank driver in the Westminster Dragoons finally came ashore on ‘Sword’ beach, 3 hours after the start of what would go down in history as ‘D-Day’. By midnight 57,000 American and 75,000 British and Canadian troops and their equipment were encamped on the beachhead, pinned down by heavy German artillery fire. This is one man’s incredible true story. From boarding his landing craft in Tibury Docks hampered by terrible weather, to the disembarkation on Sword beach and the beginning of an incredible journey fighting through heavily defended fortifications on his way to the notorious concentration camp of Belsen. The liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation had finally begun. Although Operation Overlord was a success the price these men paid was heavy, with 2,500 killed and over 8,500 wounded. But it was a price they were prepared to pay for Europe’s freedom. This is a true story of one man’s personal war, a story that not even Hollywood could make up.
