Excerpt from History of the University of Edinburgh, From 1580 to 1646 Ministers and citizans of Edinburgh before na med, and many else assisting them. So} that having obtained ane gift of ane University within the citie, in the beginning of this year they purchased from John Gib and John Fenton, servants to the King, their right of the Kirk of Field, to be ane place for the si tuation of the intended Colledge: It consist ed then of two parts, divided'by ane narrow lane goeing from the Cowgate, on the west syde of Mr Alexander Guthrie's yards, thorow the place where the common-hall now stands; and from thence towards the west, where new the back gate of the Colledge leadeth to the Potter-row Port. On the north-west of this lane was the great lodging where now are the schools of the private classes. This was the lodging of the Duke of Chatteleraut, Earle of Aron, and, by the forfeiture of the Hamiltons, disponed to some Courtiers, and by them to the Magnum of Edinburgh.
