C., City Directory, 1923, Vol. 12: Embracing an Alphabetical List of Business Houses and Private Citizens, a Directory of the City, County, State and National Governments, Fire Alarm Boxes, Churches, Public and Private Schools, Secret and Benevolent Institutions, Banks After the war Durham's population rapidly increased. The station became a town and was incorporated by the act of the General Assembly, ratified April 10, 1869. It was named for the man who gave the land on which to build the station, Dr. B. L. Durham. At the time the above bill passed the General Assembly the town of Durham was in the county of Orange. Exactly twelve years later a bill for the establishment of Durham county was ratified by the people, having been introduced in the General Assembly by the Honorable Caleb B. Green. A slice of Orange and a slice of Wake went to make up the county. Just a few years ago another part of Wake was cut off and handed over to Durham in the form of Carr township. From this small beginning Durham has grown into a thriving, progressive, wide-awake city. Its importance can best be gathered from the information which follows: area: square miles.
