Description

"Hidden Afghanistan" is a superbly illustrated survey of the history and arts of ancient Afghanistan, as revealed by a series of great archaeological excavations at four specific sites: Tepe Fullol, Ai Khanum, Tillya-tepe and Begram. Each site sheds various light on aspects of life and society in ancient Afghanistan: its role as a trade hub between the great civilizations of the late Bronze Age; the influence of Hellenism from the fourth to the second century BC; its spectacular nomadic funeral traditions (from about the first century BC); and, its unique selection of Indian, Parthian, Greek and Egyptian artefacts, most from about the first century AD. The book also pays special attention to the story of the return of many priceless artefacts to the National Museum of Afghanistan following the overthrow of the Taliban.
