This is an interesting story of two young lasses who find themselves in dire straights – mainly from their own selfish doings. Their solution is extreme. Kate Winslet is always worth watching
This truly is an amazing look into the darker side of peaceful New Zealand. The very fact this film is based on the true story of Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme makes it so much more absorbing, so don't forget when you're watching it that the narrative diary entries are the real entries Pauline wrote. This makes the characters so much more believable, and very, very intriguing – not to mention the great performances by the cast! Really quite a fantastic film, and the ending, although must of us know it, still had my family sitting in a cruel, silent suspense.
“A true story that shocked a nation” – This line sums up this movie. Truly shocking…Yet an amazing masterpiece! Set in the 1950's, it depicts the true story of Juliet Hulme, and Pauline Parker – Two girls who form a very close, almost romantic attachment, in a very homophobic society. As the girls friendship deepens, they begin to create a fantasy world away from their own miserable lives. But when the parents begin to fear that they may have an ‘unhealthy’ relationship, they do their best to seperate them, which results in the girls plotting an unspeakable crime so they can stay together.
One of Peter Jackson's first films, and probably one of his best. This film will have you laughing, crying (In my case!) but most of all, clapping your hands over your mouth with shock as you watch the girls putting their horrific plan into action.
A stellar cast, including Sarah Peirse as Honora Rieper; Melanie Lynksey, and Kate Winslet in their debut roles as Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme, is what really makes this movie a must see.
