Description

Excerpt from Hannah Lightfoot: Queen Charlotte the Chevalier D'eon, Dr. Wilmot's Polish Princess These Notes on the story of Hannah Lightfoot have been reprinted in compliance with suggestions from several quarters, that the proofs which they contain of the utter groundlessness of the scandal should be pre served in a more convenient form than the pages of Notes and Queries, in which they originally appeared. A writer, who has obviously paid much attention to the subject, while admitting that the evidence of the want of truth in the story, which is here adduced, is conclusive, thinks there are two statements respect ing it which require further canvassing. One is Mr. Steinman Steinman's (n. Q. 2md S. I. 222) state ment that a portrait of Miss Axford, the Fair Quaker, painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, exists at Knole, and the other, the statement of E. D. (n. Q. 1st S. X. 430) that Dr. James Dalton, of the Madras Medical Service, married a daughter of Hannah Lightfoot by George III.
