Description

Excerpt from H. R. 2229, Free Trade With Cuba Act: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures and the Subcommittee on Trade of the Committee on Ways and Means, House of Representatives, One Hundred Third Congress, Second Session, March 17, 1994 Additional] the bill addresses important issues of financial claims by U. Citizens and corporations against the Government of Cuba and the crucial matters of human rights and democracy. I do know that there are strongly held views on both sides of this issue, but it is my hope that these hearings will help move the de bate forward. As a member of the Ways and Means Committee, I have been involved in crafting the Caribbean Basin Initiative and other legislation affecting the Caribbean and Latin American re gions. As Chairman of the Select Committee on Narcotics, I have been intimately involved in stopping the flow of illegal drugs from and through countries in that region.
