Description

In the first three weeks of the Gulf War, the RAF flew some 2,500 sorties against enemy targets inside Iraq and Kuwait. The missions they flew were some of the most perilous of the entire conflict, including low level Tornado strikes against heavily fortified Iraqi airfields. This is the story of those crucial first few weeks of 1991 when the skies were filled with F-117A Stealth aircraft, F-16s, Jaguars and Tornados, as the British, French, American and other Allied air forces systematically destroyed ground communications, nuclear and chemical warfare weapons centres, transport routes and airfields. GULF AIR WAR looks at the war from the pilot’s viewpoint, with dramatic film footage of precision guided bombs and missiles striking their targets with spectacular accuracy. The air war in the Gulf saw the effective use of ‘Stealth’ technology and the most sophisticated computerised weapons systems. However, the old veteran aircraft of the Cold War also proved invaluable. Nimrods, VC-10s and Victor Tankers flew long hauls, while updated Buccaneer attack jets worked in tandem with later model Tornados. B-52s – veterans of Vietnam – laid carpets of bombs, while A-10 Warthog ground attack aircraft chewed up Iraqi armour. GULF AIR WAR looks at the build up to the conflict and then the epic air war itself, with extensive use of dramatic film material. Allied veterans describe what it was actually like to dog-fight with Saddam Hussein’s MiGs, and to fly through the dense ring of anti-aircraft fire around Baghdad. Also featured are Apache gunship strikes against Iraqi ground forces and spectacular film of Cruise and Tomahawk missiles pounding enemy targets. This is the Gulf War in the air, as it was really fought.
