Author Biography:

graduated in Agriculture and Animal Physiology (Hons) at the University of Reading, and obtained a PhD from Leeds University, England. His life's work (over 40 years) has been devoted to academic research and teaching in animal growth and nutrition at the 'Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen', the 'Scottish Agricultural College' and the University of Aberdeen. He is also a visiting Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He served on the Agricultural Research Council working parties on the 'Nutrient Requirements of Pigs' and the Joint Consultative Council aimed at achieving better integration between research and practice. In 1988, he was given the prestigious 'David Black Award' for outstanding service to the British Pig Industry. He was awarded a visiting fellowship by the Polish Academy of Sciences and a Commonwealth Fellowship by the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture. In 1993 he was elected as an Honorary Life Member of the British Society of Animal Science. is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Compliance at the University of Illinois. He received his doctorate in Animal Science from the University of Wisconsin and conducted post-doctoral research in human nutrition at the University of Georgia. Dr. Novakofski has been a Professor of Animal Sciences at the University of Illinois since 1983, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in growth, development and metabolism. Jan's research program has included obesity, myogenesis and endocrinology with a current focus on prion disease. He has more than 250 abstracts and publications with colleagues from the College of Veterinary Medicine, the College of Engineering, and the College of Applied Health Sciences as well as the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Dr. Novakofski is a member of the Division of Nutritional Sciences, and has served on the University Senate, the Faculty Advisory Committee, and as Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
