Harley Quinn (Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel) is a fictional supervillain who appears in comic books published by DC Comics and in television shows and videogames licensed by Warner Brothers. The character was created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, and first appeared in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series in September 1992. She later appeared in DC Comics' Batman comic books, first appearing in The Batman Adventures #12 (September 1993). Her name is a play on the name “Harlequin,” a character which originated in the commedia dell'arte.The character is a frequent accomplice and girlfriend of Batman's nemesis the Joker, and is also a close friend of the supervillain Poison Ivy, from whom she gained her immunity to poisons and toxins.
