It analyzes the distribution and growth of towns and cities and explores the social behavioral characteristics of urban living. Some parts of the chapter focus upon populations and places, urban growth and urbanization, urban development as a global phenomenon, lifestyles in the city, global urban society, world cities, and the urban future. Emphasis throughout is placed upon the world scale, urban development being linked to the emergence of a global economy and society.
