Description

The state subsidies which have supported agriculture in developed market economies are being questioned. Food surpluses and the damaging effects of modern farming techniques on the environment are regularly reported in the press and media. "The Geography of Agriculture in Developed Market Economies" describes and explains how these and other problems being encountered in modern agriculture have developed and also how the problems vary in intensity between different farming regions. The book deals systematically with the topics which contribute to an understanding of present day agriculture such as: agricultural industrialization, land, labour and capital, agriclutural marketing and farming in an urbanized world. It covers not just the economics of agriculture, but also the relationship between farming and the environment. Each chapter is written by one of a team of agricultural geographers with a special research interest in that topic and it covers both the UK and other developed market economies, giving global perspective. The book is aimed at 1st and 2nd year undergraduates. It is suitable for the following courses: agricultural geography, agricultural economics, economic grography, rural sociology, environmental conservation/management (UG & MSc) rural land management (UG & MSc).
