Description

Concern over the environmental problems affecting our planet is increasing, as is the need for a sustainable solution. Remote sensing is recognised as a powerful tool for the gathering of environmental information. In particular, observation by natural resources satellites is an increasingly viable method of data collection, complementing other methods such as aerial photography and field work. Students on introductory and intermediate remote sensing courses will find this a useful textbook, presenting as it does the fundamentals of satellite remote sensing with an eye on environmental applications. It covers the most recent missions (Terra, Envisat, EO, Landsat-7, and SPOT-5) and is well illustrated with figures and graphs. The main interpretation techniques, both visual and digital, are also reviewed, and the book describes enhancement and filtering, vegetation indices, principal component analysis, basic statistical classifiers and other techniques extensively used in remote sensing analysis. New approaches are presented, including hyperspectral analysis, high-spatial resolution data, fusion techniques and neural networks. An extensive analysis of accuracy assessment methods is also given. Finally, the author examines the integration of remote sensing results and geographic information systems.
