Fundamentals of Computational Swarm Intelligence covers the very new computational paradigm of Swarm Intelligence, a field that started from biological research, and is now picking up momentum within the research community. The book has six parts, each covering a specific topic. The Social Metaphor focuses on how social network structures are used to exchange information among individuals, and how the aggregate behavior of these individuals forms a powerful organism. Part II introduces the formal theory of optimization. Evolutionary Computation outlines paradigms with relations to Swarm Intelligence, including genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming, evolutionary strategies, cultural algorithms, and co-evolution. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) looks at the choreographic movements of birds in a flock as a basis for the PSO algorithms models. Social Insects focuses on the applications of ant colony optimization (ACO) to real-world problems, including routing optimization in communications networks, structure optimization, truss optimization, data mining, data clustering, and many more. The last part covers methods of empirical research.
