Originally published in 1973, this landmark book is a short history of literature, art, music, theatre, architecture, science and learning in Australia. It was the winner of the 1974 National Book Council Award for Australian Literature. This important book is now back in print with a new introduction by historian John Rickard of Monash University.

Author Biography:

Dr Geoffrey Serle, AO (19921998) was a distinguished scholar and John Curtin biographer. He was general editor of the Australian Dictionary of Biography between 1975 and 1988. He is also a well-known author and his work has won several prestigious awards including the Ernest Scott prize, the National Book Council Banjo award and the Age Book of the Year.
