Description

There is no question that submission is a theme of scripture. No one doubts that we are to submit to God. But in our relationships with others the word submit has a negative connotation. There seems to be something wrong with that concept. And indeed there is. When the Lord Jesus Christ gave up His glory with the Father and descended to earth and gave Himself up for humanity, He was demonstrating this concept; and it was not submission. The Lord did not submit to us--He gave Himself up for us. This is the attitude--the mind--that we also are to have. This is way beyond submission. Our English word falls far short of the true meaning that the Holy Spirit would have us understand. As we mature into the image of Christ, as we are transformed into that image, this attitude--this mind--will be formed in us. The author, in the process of developing a more in-depth understanding of the meaning of submission, also demonstrates Bible study methods helpful to the ordinary Christian who is seeking to follow Paul's command to Timothy to ."rightly divide the Word of Truth." Shirley L. Miller is a retired elementary school teacher who has been studying and teaching the Bible for over fifty years. Her many years of study have led her through and beyond, and sometimes back again, to various ways of study, and consideration of multiple interpretative methods. But the guiding verse of her life is Acts 17: 11: "Now the Bereans. received the message with great eagerness and examined the scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true." (NIV)
