Description

This book about the love of food is served up with stories, surprises, conversations, and laughter. You will find a kitchen filling up with smoke, experiments that flop, a strawberry fight, and food served with advice. The book suggests that eating can be complicated, filled with memories, and messy; that it is a language of hunger and longing. You will wonder why we eat the way we do, the state of our food, how it is related to fashion and religion, and what we think about abundance. You will consider the relationships between dependence and waiting on others when traveling in other cultures. Above all, you will experience how food is always a substantial gift. Be hungry, open up these pages. Come and sit at my table.

Author Biography:

Adria L. Libolt grew up on a small dairy farm with a mother who often milked the cows, made two pies for Sunday and a dad who made fishing a high priority when he wasn't working. Out of such abundance grew her love for food. Just out of high school, she moved to Michigan, attended Calvin College, received a BA in English, and later the University of Michigan an MA degree in Education. She taught junior high, high school, and community college classrooms, and she worked briefly as an educational consultant. Later, she worked on program evaluation research for the Michigan Department of Social Services, and then for the Michigan Department of Corrections, where she eventually became a deputy warden which position she held for over twenty years. After retiring from corrections, she worked in the area of adult literacy, teaching prospective tutors and matching them to students. She recently moved back to the Pacific Northwest with her husband Clayton and enjoys running, hiking, cooking, reading, and writing, and occasionally blogging at the blog site, Kitchen Konniving (kitchenkonniving.com). She also loves the coastal waters and kayaking in the Pacific Northwest. Adria has written articles related to justice in Corrections Today and anthologies including Frontiers of Justice and Gardening at a Deeper Level. Her first book, A Deputy Warden's Reflections on Prison Work, tells some of the stories of her time working in Corrections.
