Description

Excerpt from Flora of the Town of Southington, Conn. And Its Vicinity: A List of the Fern and Seed Plants Growing Without Cultivation The town Of Southington, Connecticut, lies near the middle of the state, being slightly to the west and south of the geographical center. Its boundaries are somewhat irregular, but the general shape is a square with sides about six miles long, giving an area of approximately thirty-six square miles. The larger part of this surface lies in a valley between ranges of hills on the east and west. The lower parts Of the valley are about one hundred and twenty-five feet above sea level, while the tops of the hills rise to an elevation Of nearly one thousand feet. The soil varies greatly. The western line of the town follows the crest of the ridge that marks the eastern edge Of the granite region of western Connecticut. This abrupt ridge rising seven to eight hundred feet above the valley runs north and south in nearly a straight line for many miles. It is known as Wolcott Mountain, and the soil is there entirely granitic. The surface of the valley is mostly glacial drift of different kinds. In one section are sand plains interspersed with ponds and sandy swamps. In another part are clay beds, in still another are deposits of sandy gravel covering a large area.
