The First World War was one of the seminal events in world history. The First World War in 100 Objects offers a unique perspective on the world's first truly global conflict. It traces its history through the examination of iconic items like the Zeppelin, the gas mask and Winston Churchill's Cigar, to personal objects which tell the poignant stories of individuals and official documents, medals and badges. Fully illustrated, each object will be accompanied by approximately 500 words of text that will give the item context and highlight its significance.

Author Biography

Professor Gary Sheffield was appointed Chair of War Studies at the University of Birmingham in 2006, having previously taught as a Professor of Modern History at King's College, London. He is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Society of Arts and has written widely on twentieth-century military history especially the First World War. In 2003, he shared the Templer Medal for Military Literature for his contribution to The British General Staff: Innovation and Reform (2002). Gary regularly broadcasts on UK radio and television, and his work has appeared in the Guardian, the Mail on Sunday, the Times Literary Supplement and BBC History Magazine. He lives in Oxfordshire.
