Firefly - Complete Series (4 Disc Set) reviews

I stubbornly refused to believe friends who told me this was an awesome concept, perfectly excecuted. Who knew a future-set Western Sci-fi series could be this entertaining ? Character based, outstanding performances all 'round, funny as, never a boring shot or set-up. My only suggestion (apart from BUY IT TODAY) is get the movie Serenity too – and watch the series FIRST…

Initially the idea of a ‘western in space’ put me off this show but I have it a chance and discovered that it is easily one of the greatest and most witty Sci Fi shows ever made.

The writing, the dialogue, the characters and the action in this show has successfully set it apart from all the other sci fi shows around

Criminally it was cancelled after only one season.

Fabulous season. Had great stories with lots of action that kept you wanting to watch the next part. Each character fitted in well, each one having their own stories and secrets. The sets were great too. I was sad when it finished. Highly recommend this series and Serenity the movie that followed.

Sci-fi Western seems an unlikely genre for any media product but creator Joss Whedon has provided us with a true gem in Firefly (and the movie sequel, Serenity). With true elements from both Science Fiction (such as spaceships) and Westerns (such as cowboys and guns) no one could justify the cutting short of this show. Captain Mal and his crew are a true family and should have graced our screens for far longer than they got the chance to. This DVD is a great buy and I just really wish there was more.

Pure awesomeness! Everyone must see and buy this! Hands down!

My only complaint with this set is that it is not long enough as the series was cancelled after one season. It has a logical progression developing the characters and the story arc; good and believable special effects; and credible acting and production values.

The Western tone of this show can sometimes be very off-putting. Especially as in a number of episodes the sci-fi all but disappears and is replaced by horses and revolvers.

However this is almost completely made-up by the script writing, which is simply spot on; the best I have seen in quite some time. There are some great comic moments in this show, hence even if the Western tone leaves you wary, still make sure to at least still check it out. I certainly wasn't disappointed.

Best Sci-Fi series I have ever watched. Pity it was cancelled on American tv. Also the lead guy, Nicholas Fillon is such a goregous hunk! :) No one could ever take his place of Mal if it ever came back.

If you are a Firefly fan, or even if you have only heard it talked about on The Big Bang Theory and wondered, what is Sheldon going on about- This is the best way to learn all. A true classic science fiction mixed with wild west series ever, trust me it works and the humour mixed in amazing. 10/10

This is a fantastic series, great ideas, great writing, even better acting. Shame a lack of studio vision killed it off – should've had at least 5 more years…

C'mon, it's cowboys in space. How could that not be great!

A great sci-fi series that should never have been cancelled. The only criticism is that it leaves you wishing there was more.

FireFly is a cowboy story set in outer space. Like Blake's 7 the team are a interesting mix of people that roam space and get upto all sorts of adventures as a consequence of their behaviour. Serenity is a film that was released later and worth getting as it tidies up the Firefly adventures. My son likes it every bit as Star Wars and I like it even though I prefer Dr Who. This DVD set is well worth watching. It has a cult following now because it was so good and well made and has great character development.

This is an absolutely awesome series and it is such a shame that it was cancelled after only one season. :( If you loved guardians of the galaxy then you will probably love this too. It has that same kind of feel with the mix of past and future to create a truly unique feel. Also If you like this series then there is a movie by the name of Serenity which wraps up the series.

Definitely worth the watch, gutted there isn't any more seasons

Gives back story to Serenity.

I love the comedy, drama, sci-fi and the way it all rolls together into an amazing experience. If you haven't seen it, see it!

Good stories,acting and firefly great boat – ended too soon.

After watching the first episode I was hooked. The characters have enough back story to get you immersed and attached to them. Through every adventure you get a glimpse at the scale of the setting and you realize there is so many stories that can be told.

Although this TV series graced our screens for only one season and was released 12 years ago, the characters, graphics, storyline are still relevant (and awesome) today. All hail Joss Whedon – King of the Nerds!

Good to finally get this series on DVD. Takes me back a few years when it was on TV and Nathan was not known as Castle. The good old wild west brought up the the future.

I am not a huge fan of the Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place/Castle dude but he did not put me off! Good stories, interesting characters and above average graphics. Big enjoy!

This collection has been so great to watch. I wish that there was more to watch. Why did it have to end- It is a must see if you liked the movie Serenity.

Oh. Emm. Gee! Like, ermagerd! You must watch this. Devote an entire weekend to sitting and watching this, the only season of Firefly ever made before some doofus at one of the American TV networks decided that they had something better to make than the most amazing show on the planet. Travel the 'Verse with Captain Mal and his cohorts. It's totally worth it, I promise! SHINY!

Cowboy's and space.......Don't mix…BUT for some reason… This series makes it work. A good series to have in my collection.

The only bad thing I can say about this series is they should have made more!!!

I like sci-fi but was a bit sceptical of Firefly and its western/sci-fi combo but workes, Firefly is brilliant! I particularly like that it is more believable than most sci fi's, there are no crazy looking aliens as such, the future isn't so rosey and after a world war people do what it takes to get by. I just wish the series could have kept going! A DVD well worth owning!

Have only watched Serenity, so far, Have friends who are big fans, some not so, have to say looks extremely promising for the first viewing, keenly looking forward to getting to grips with the rest!

had this recommended to me due to all the other sci-fi series I love and I have to admit by the end of it all I did become a fan.. only wish there was more seasons and tied off nicely.. something i'm happy to have added to my sci-fi collection..

Such an awesome show! One of those programs you can watch over and over and it never tires, in fact it only gets better!

This is one of those reare gems that came along once in a blue moon, a must for all fans of sci and westerns

As expected, great series

Probably one of the best series I've ever watched, the cast is amazing and work really well together. It has a feel that this isn't an impossible concept because although the technology may have changed, humanities problems are still the same.

It is a brilliant fusion of the Sci-Fi and Western genres.

If you wish to further this magnificent experience watch the movie serenity.

A group of smugglers are trying to make a living in space doing little illegal activities. Did I mention they have the Alliances most wanted weapon on board in the shape of a teenage girl that the Allaince woulds do nothing to get-

An enjoyable story about a bunch of rogue space travellers – the Serenity movie makes a whole lot more sense now – a good watch all round

Even if your not a sci if fan this series will grab you! The characters are fantastic, funny and complex. It's a well written and well shot series that will leave you wanting more- shame they didn't make any more!

Love this series. We are using it to introduce some of our flatmates to science fiction so they can better understand their boyfriends and appreciate the awesomeness of the genre! Brilliant characters, good humour, good action and effects and an engaging overall story arc.

For anyone who has seen castle or for anyone looking for a good old western with a-bit of a twist this TV series is definitly for you.

While it was sad to have it cut off so soon, every episode is an adventure that will grip you and make you want to see more.

Good storyline with well-developed and developing characters. A bit clunky to start and then it settles with a good ensemble cast who share in the sly humour that comes through unexpectedly.

LOVE this series – plenty of sarcasm and clever story lines! Shame there is no more to come.

Proof that good guys dont always finish last. Malcolm Reynolds and his misfit crew mix space travel with cowboy western styles , living the criminal life on the rim but always trying the “right” thing. While the stories are never too dark and the comedic roles played by most of the crew keep it that way the underlying story has a much deeper meaning at times. Just a shame that Joss Whedon didnt get to make another series…the movie covered off a lot of loose ends but season 2 could've been great. Oh and …no space noises…as it should be.

Discovered this after watching the movie ‘Serenity’. A very well written series with a great cast. Well worth the cost.

Years ago I saw one episode and have been on the look out for it since, at a good price. Well no worries about the price here, and after the DVD I felt I had got my moneys worth. And I still have three more DVDs to go.

Had heard about the cult following this series has and can now see why. This is an absolutely brilliant show, should not have been canned.

It's a crazy mix of western, sci-f, thriller, action, comedy, and romance. We're liking it quite a lot.

A diverse group of people, just trying to survive after the universal war. It has adventure, comedy, romance (of sorts), it's just a fun series to watch about a great group of characters. Not impressed it was cancelled, must buy the movie – Serenity.

This like alot of great shows was cancelled after one series, later became a cult-classic and was eventually green-lighted for a full-length hollywood movie Serenity given its rise in popularity. Anyway the show consists of Captain Mal Reynalds and his oddball crew flying in a old almost wreck of a ship called Serenity, a Firefly class spaceship, hence the name of the show. They seek out jobs to both get paid and to buy replacement parts for whatever broke on the ship, essentially this showq is cowboys in space, dangerous jobs, high risk, adventure and pure entertainment.

This earlier TV series ‘Firefly’ is a revelation if all you have seen so far is the movie 'Serenity. Production values are movie-quality. The price at NZ$34.99 was literally the best in the world.

Noted more for the movie than the series ‘Firefly’ delves greatly into the history of this eclectic bunch of space cowboys.

Firefly is one of my all time favourite TV shows. It has great, likeable, funny characters. A great story. A fantastic setting (sci-fi/western). And good sound/visual effects to top it off. All of the special features on the DVDs are really good too. A great addition. It really is a breath of fresh air in a genre filled with cliches, aliens and bad characters.

What was disappointing about this however was the quality of the audio on the DVDs. If the audio quality was better it would be a definite 5 star, but it really is quite bad. Apparently the quality is due to a bad job at changing the format from NTSC (America) to PAL (UK/NZ).

I would suggest buying the Blu-Ray version which will have much better audio/visual quality.

Not what it seems at first glance. This is star-wars and the good the bad and the ugly all rolled into one. It is comedic with Jane being so funny and there is action, romance, suspense, drama….all you could ask for. Nathan Fillion is excellent as the captain of the crew and I think all of the cast was perfectly chosen.

From an excellent title song and pilot episode through to the finale of the series and subsequent movie (Serenity) this series oozes charm and style. Science fiction fans, those with a great sense of humour and some romantic spirit will all find a diamond in the rough. This is all the episodes in one bundle – the only problem: they didn't make enough of them. A must watch.

love my sci-fi and never really got into western type films or tv shows, but combine them and you get Firefly and man what a show it is!!! love this show and is very enjoyable to watch and the characters are some of my all time favorites! very sad that it was canceled after only one series. but nevertheless, everyone should definitely give this series a chance and watch it, you'll be surprised at how it pulls you in.

This series is really good, but whoever produced the PAL dvds (i.e. what we get in NZ) did a really terrible job of converting the audio from the NTSC masters. It seems like it was really badly timestretched, so it has this nasty ‘graunchy’ quality. Either buy the blu-ray edition, or import the dvd set from the US; if you care about audio quality, don't buy this edition!

I just finished watching the Complete Series of Firefly on DVD. It was a short-lived sci-fi series on Fox, in 2002. After watching the DVD collection, I'm sad that I missed it in its original airing, but pleased that I took the time to watch the series on DVD.For a Science-Fiction genre show, there is not a lot of technobabble. Its more of a human story.

Firefly is a brillant mix of humor and action, the only thing it is lacking is a longer story life as it was cancelled half way through producing season 1.

If you can imagine a Western where the hero's fly round in a space ship saving the day then you have some idea of this series but really it is just a bunch of mis-fits and oddballs trying to make a living on the frontiner of space without compramsing there own set of honour.

I highly reccommend this show, I went from not knowing a thing about the series to becoming a HUGE fan in a day

Firefly is brilliant… its “sci-fi” but it most definitely appeals to non-scifi people, I have shown this to so many people who would usually say they hate scifi stuff, and they are all hooked..

the characters are all interesting and unique, each has his or her own story, and these are expressed throughout the series.

There is humour, romance, action, space battles… Its a real shame the series was canceled before it rose to the popularity it now has. The huge cult fan base this series generated single handedly lead to the making of Serenity, which is the movie that rounds of the series, and is a purchase that should go hand in hand with the firefly series.

When this series was first aired on TV I avoided it as I just didn't think it would be my cup of tea. I then saw the movie serenity at the Cinema and was drawn into the world of firefly. To put it mildly I was blown away. Its such an odd concept having a western in space but the thing that really pulls this off is the cast. There is real chemistry to be seen here. Add some intelligent scripts and some genuinely funny moments and what you have is cult sci-fi classic. By the end of the series you really feel for the crew like they are part of the family. Its just such a shame the series was never continued. In short you would be mad not to buy it at this price,

Had never heard of Firefly until I saw it at a friends place and got hooked.

It doesn't have a dark theme like a lot of sci-fi's have, but a light mood, even cheesy in places, which makes it heaps of fun to watch
