It was opened to the public on May 23, 1911. The Library occupies the building as a tenant under terms Of a con tract with the City, dated December 8, 1897 This building serves as the centre Of the whole library system and contains the administrative Offices of both Reference and Circulation Departments, the main ref erence collections (i. The books from the Astor and Lenox Libraries, and thosebought since consolidation with the income from the endowment funds Of the Library), a branch for the circulation of books, a children's room, a training school for libra rians, and also the Extension Division (for merly the Travelling Library Office), and the Library for the Blind.
