It looks at why there was a shortage of familiar foods like bacon, butter and bananas, and the ways people made their rations go further. The history detective helps children to answer questions about rationing during the War by finding clues in their local area.

Dr Martin Parsons is director of PGCE Secondary at the University of Reading. He has established a centre for evacuee studies at the university and has lectured on the topic at the Imperial War Museum and abroad.
