Both the old nations and the new nations were just beginning to sit up after their four-year debauch of warfare and to realize that they ought to take something for the awful headaches from which they were suffering. Pessimism was rampant. The en tire outlook was a rich dark brown in color. The money of the Central European nations was tum bling to new low levels from day to day. The dazed business men of those nations hadn't learned how to keep pace with the falling exchange. Each nation, as it weakly took up the burden of living in the morning, confidently expected its neighbor nations to expire miserably from anaemia before nightfall or at least by the following Friday. Nobody knew what was going to happen; and those who made any predictions were usually wrong. An Austrian or a Pole or a Czech or a Magyar might go to Sleep at eventide with the equivalent of eleven dollars in his trousers pocket, secure in the conviction that he was going to buy a pair of shoes with his money on the following day; but when he awoke to the rosy flush of a new dawn, prices might have doubled.
