His philosophy, Mr. Carlyle does not intend that his readers should think thus humbly of his labours on this point; but he must know that this is the fact of the case, inasmuch as the narrative in the above extract is given in nearly the same words, in the introduction to the Pell Papers, ' on the Times of the Protectorate, edited by the author of this article, and that work at least we must suppose Mr. Carlyle to have read, inasmuch as he quotes from it.
