Description

This famous series examines key themes in British, European and World history in short, succinct volumes. The text is supported by primary material in a Documents section, a full bibliography and an index; where appropriate there are maps, chronologies and glossaries. All the books in the series are written by experts in the field who are not only familiar with the latest research but have often contributed to it. Works of scholarship in their own right, the books also provide a survey of current historical interpretations. Longman has now inaugurated a major programme of renewal and expansion for Seminar Studies, with many new titles and new editions in the pipeline. Existing books are being re-presented in a larger, more reader-friendly format as they reprint; and new books and new editions are being reset into an entirely new page design. This Seminar Study introduces students to England's foreign policy during the reigns of the Tudor monarchs. It was a complex and intricate business, for the monarchs themselves and today for the historians and students trying to make sense of it. In this succinct introduction the author addresses the key questions facing students - for example, to what extent did monarch or minister made policy - was it Wolsey or Henry VIII, Cromwell or Henry VIII, Burghley or Elizabeth I? The book opens with an introductory section in which Dr Doran considers the international background, overseas trade, military resources, and the actual formulation of foreign policy. The author then looks at each reign in turn thus providing a narrative and explanation of the major events and policy decisions throughout the Tudor period.Students are sure to welcome this Second Edition of England and Europe 1485-1603. For the new edition the author has taken the opportunity to rewrite large sections of the text, thereby taking account of the findings of historians' most recent research. For example, the chapter on Henry VII has been heavily revised in view of recent evidence which suggests that the king's pacifist approach to foreign policy has been overrated and that his unwillingness to spend money on military preparations greatly exaggerated. The main text is supplemented by source material in the Documents Section, two maps, a bibliography (now updated and expanded), and, new for the Second Edition, a chronology of the main events.Susan Doran is Senior Lecturer in History and Director of the History Programme at St Mary's University College, a college of the University of Surrey.Cover: Queen Elizabeth Feeds the Dutch Cow c.1586 by Adriaen van de Venne, reproduced courtesy of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. (Satirical representation of the Netherlands as a cow being manhandled by various foreign powers - including Philip II of Spain attempting to ride it and Elizabeth I trying to feed it. The latter is an allusion to England's alliance with the Estates-General against Spain.)LongmanLogo
