Description

An international group of biologists, biochemists, and endocrinologists have contributed to this book on the opioidergic control mechanisms in reproduction and stress physiology. It seems that endorphins and other endogenous opioids are the connecting link between reproductive functions and stress adaptation of the human organism. All chapters give reviews on the various studies in basic opioid research. The main topics covered are endogenous opioids and the pituitarygonadal system, ovarian endorphin secretion, pregnancy associated changes of plasma endorphin and opioid control of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis. The numerous clinical implications arising from this research are also explored.
