How can both statements be possible? The former refers to those who perform [their religious duty] for its own sake, but the latter refers to those who do [their duty] not for its own sake, as R. Juda, in the name of Rab, said; for R. J uda, in the name of Rab, said: By all means let a man en gage himself in the study of the Torah and in meritorious deeds, even if not for its own sake; because through the work of a selfish purpose, he will eventually arrive [at ob serving it] for its own sake.
